  1. Hi Shawn, I'm a Singaporean living in Germany and stumbled across your blog as I am thinking of learning the gu qin! I will be back during the CNY this weekeend and was wondering if you knew anyone who has a gu qin which they would like to sell? - Gladys

  2. Hi Gladys

My teacher, Mr John Thompson has 2 high quality guqins for sale. Please kindly email him directly. His email address is shown on his website SILKQIN.COM The directions to his home behind Orchard Road is at his webpage at http://www.silkqin.com/13pers/singapore.htm

Also, if you email me SHAWNHOW (at) OUTLOOK (dot) COM I will send you his cellpho

ne number and his home phone number. Even if you happen to miss him this CNY (he might travel to Shanghai with his wife), he can still buy a guqin for you in China and ship it to you in Germany.

Also, he also offers guqin lessons by Skype. He has a student who had lessons with him from Berlin. Personally, I also had skype lessons with John Thompson before. It works, but you need to make sure you are not using wireless at home. You must plug in the Ethernet cable into your computer.

I love learning guqin from John Thompson because he insists on using silk strings (and not metal-nylon strings) on guqin. He's very passionate about that.

Happy Chinese New Year to you!

    Shawn

    1. Hi Shawn,

Thanks for your prompt response! I have emailed Mr. John Thompson about his qins. There are weekly classes held in Hamburg which I am currently attending though without a gu qin it's not so ideal. Hopefully I manage to pick one up over the chinese new year.

Great blog and happy chinese new year to you too!

      Gladys

    1. Hi June

There's a lady selling banana-shaped guqins in Singapore. You can order it at http://www.etsy.com/listing/110282952/new-banana-leaf-guqin?ref=sr_gallery_1&ga_search_query=guqin&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=ZZ&ga_search_type=all

My friend bought one from her. It's very good quality. The price is also quite affordable. Silk strings can be mounted by yourself. It's much easier to mount silk strings than changing metal-nylon strings on guqin. My teacher John Thompson would be more than happy to change the metal strings to silk strings for you in his home (located behind Sommerset MRT station). He did that for my friend who has since also started taking guqin lessons with him. Each set of 7 silk strings cost about S$65, I think. He's very passionate about getting people to play with silk strings on guqin. hahaha. Please kindly contact Mr John Thompson directly. The directions to his house is presented on his webpage at http://www.silkqin.com/13pers/singapore.htm

Cheers! Gong Hei Fatt Choy to you!

  5. Hi June

    Thanks for your question!

My guqin was selected by my teacher John Thompson (www.silkqin.com) when he visited JunTianFang's palace/factory in Beijing in April 2012, and he asked JunTianFang to seafreight the guqin to his home in Singapore. Subsequently I collected my guqin from his home after the silk strings are stablized.

For my guqin model "You Lan Kong Gu" I paid to my teacher in SGD the equivalent of RMB24,000. That's the price before JTF revised their price list a little (up by RMB1000) upwards in late 2012. No, my teacher did not earn any profit from this transaction. He merely did my a big favor. The price list of all the guqin models are strictly fixed. The entire price list can be perused at this webpage: http://www.juntianfang.com/TBSM/TBSM.html

JunTianFang alsop has a TaoBao online store at http://juntianfang.taobao.com/ but Taobao only accepts PRC-address-registered credit cards, but you can use www.sgshop.com.sg to purchase, ship and track it from China to Singapore for you. However, you need to include a note to the seller (JunTianFang) to built a wooden crate around the foam hard case of the guqin, so that it would not be crushed by other boxes during seafreight.

From PRC to Singapore, seafreight takes about 2 weeks. www.sgshop.com.sg can also handle other large and heavy objects like furniture (although I've never tried that). Amazing!

Happy Chinese New Year to you!

    Shawn

  6. Hey Shawn! Gong xi fa cai! Thanks! I guess i would properly be going over to Jun tian fang and hand carry the qin back! Thanks alot! And keep in touch as the size of the qin community in S'pore is really not so encouraging. However, I hope we will continue our passion and liking for this gem :-)
